RHS 20th Anniversary Cruise - Mexican Riviera

April 13 - April 24, 2018 - Red Hat Society 20th Anniversary Cruise Down Mexican Riviera

Carla and Doug Kerr of Alamogordo, New Mexico were a part of 100 Red Hatters and four husbands who cruised on the Ruby Princess out of Los Angeles (actually Port of San Pedro), California on Saturday, April 14, 2018.

The first stop, April 15, 2018, was in San Diego, California where a number of Red Hatters debarked to attend a big California Red Hat Hoot with hundreds of Red Hatters taking part. I opted not to do this, having been to San Diego several times. Instead, I spent the day creating my "Festival" hat by decorating the large sombrero given to each of us by the Royal Splendor Travel Agency. They even gave the husbands each one and I was really glad because I wound up with so much on my hat that I needed two (one inside the other) to make it more stable. Knowing about the sombreros ahead of time,  I brought several items to decorate with and it turned out pretty well. In fact, at the Festival Dinner, my hat won first place. I also decorated my cabin door and won a prize for this too. FUN!

On Monday, April 16, 2018, we were afforded a Chocolate PJ Breakfast to which I wore my purple Hawaiian Caftan. Afterwards at 10:00 AM, we convened in the Michilangelo Dining Room to take part in a hat decorating class. After lunch and a catnap, we went to a Red Hat Tea in the Da Vinci Dining Room which was lovely. In the evening we attended the RHS Royal Ball dressed to the nines and had a grand time. Doug wore his tuxedo and the women were making lovely remarks about him and hugging him. He glowed and I smiled!

Tuesday, April 17, 2018, we arrived at Port Cabo San Lucas where Red Hatters took a "tender" to the shore (For those unfamiliar with the term "tender", it is like a lifeboat and used where the water is too shallow for the ship to dock.), boarded buses for a tour of the area. It is beautiful and we also did some shopping (The Red Hat official sport. ) and sightseeing.

Wednesday, April 18, 2018, after a delicious breakfast with Doug, I took a tender with many other Red Hatters and vacationers to the Port of La Paz. Again, we boarded buses to sightsee and shop. We ate lunch wherever we could find a table or a chair to sit. The place was crowded where I ate, but the food was delicious and the people very friendly.

Thursday, April 19, 2018, we found ourselves at the Port of Loreto where we again went ashore in tenders and went by Taxi to Hotel Oasis where we enjoyed a clambake and Mexican Fiesta. We were entertained by Live Music with Erick, Folcloric dances by dancers from the states of Jalisco and Baja California South and as we all know, no fiesta can end without a pinata!! The food was delicious and I do believe, Boris (Debra's hubby) ate his weight in clams! He just couldn't get enough of them. After dinner back on the Ruby Princess, I became ill with what is called "Montezuma's Revenge" and  we were quarantined to our cabin for 24 hours. However, it was a day at sea so I didn't miss too much except the jewelry making class on Friday.

Saturday morning, April 21, 2018, we docked at Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, boarded buses and very much enjoyed sightseeing and shopping as usual. My husband, Doug, unknowingly bought me a beautiful silver and platinum tortoise necklace with fire opals scattered on the backs of the tortoises for, as I told him, Mother's Day, our 19th Anniversary, my birthday and Christmas, so he doesn't have to do any shopping for the rest of the year! After dinner, our Red Hat Society CEO Debra Granich and RHS Glee Club Director Christine Lozinak, among others, entertained us dancing the Mexican Hat Dance with the Mariachis playing for them and singing.

Sunday Lunch, April 22, 2018 was a Festival where we donned our decorated sombreros and paraded around the ship through the bars and pool areas. This was also much FUN and I managed to wear my hat by stabilizing it with Doug's ball cap on my head underneath. The Red Hatters also attended a 3:00 PM tea time and dinner as usual.

Monday, April 23, 2018 there were games to play and at 3:00 PM we attended the Royal Splendor Cocktail Party in the Skywalkers Nightclub. We then gathered in the pool area for a group photo and from there went to the Red Hat formal Birthday Bash Dinner. The chefs had baked a lovely purple and red cake shaped and decorated like a hat plus all the cooks and waiters came waltzing through with Baked Alaska. It was a  FUN evening. What a fabulous way to celebrate the Red Hat Society's successful 20th Anniversary!

I made a lot of new friends and for once, I wasn't the only Red Hatter from New Mexico and I got acquainted with Faun Ricks from Gallup, New Mexico. On Tuesday, April 24, 2018, we docked in San Pedro and went our separate ways to airport and vehicles.

Taking a group photo of a bunch of Red Hatters is like herding cats!

Red Hatters Tour Malkerson 408 Gallery in Carrizozo, New Mexico

Saturday, February 24, 2018

Members of the New Mexico Roadrunner Chapter of the Red Hat Society in Alamogordo, New Mexico took a day trip to Carrizozo, New Mexico to explore the "A Rose is a Rose is a Rose" display at the Malkerson 408 Gallery. There were various art forms depicting roses and it was quite interesting.

After touring the art gallery, we walked down the street to the Photography Studio which happens to be owned by the husband of the woman running the art gallery. The photography is stunning and they always have the latest photography contest winners pictures on display from the New Mexico Magazine.

Afterwards, we returned to Alamogordo to lunch at The Local. I was always taught not to say anything if you can't say something positive so I will leave it with this was a most unsatisfactory experience.

Bobbie Tanner, she of the lovely smile
Two ex Air Force buddies visiting from Colorado asked one of the girls to take a picture with the Red Hatters
They reciprocated by taking our picture. L to R: Bobbie, Darla Shelley, Alice Evans, Jean Courtier, Margie Purcella, Carla Kerr, Gail Swineford and Trudy Reese (Lu must have been shopping!)

We are now back in Alamogordo at The Local for lunch
As you can see, my salad came in a to-go box! I was not a happy camper.
Lu Mattson was with us, but she somehow escaped my camera. Also, I apologize because I was busy shopping at the art gallery and didn't take as many pictures as I should have.

This is all I have to say for now.

Theatre on the Hill Actors in Murder Mystery Weekend

Friday-Sunday, February 16-18, 2018

"Murder on the Cloudcroft Express", a spoof of Murder on the Orient Express, a play written and directed by Connie Breding, drama professor at NMSU-A in Alamogordo, was presented for a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater Weekend at the Lodge Resort and Spa in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. The hotel was sold out with people coming from several states around as well as across New Mexico for this FUN, interactive experience.

It is set in the early 1920's so the cast dressed appropriately for the era. The back story is that we are on the Cloudcroft Express from Phoenix, Arizona to Santa Fe, New Mexico. However, when we are on the Mexican Train Trestle at Cloudcroft there is an avalanche trapping us on the tracks. The engineer is able to back the train up enough so that the ski patrol and the Lodge employees are able to rescue us and bring us to the Lodge until the tracks can be cleared. As we are leaving the train a dead gentleman is discovered in his sleeping quarters and it appears he has been murdered and so it goes from there.

We have a cast of seventeen plus two crew members (Connie Breding, the director and Geowie Mosqueda, her able assistant).

We all had a marvelous time as did the attendees and I say this because they had many complimentary remarks to make about our actors.

On Friday night, we attended a champagne cocktail party with all the hotel clients and had dinner with them as well. They asked many questions about the dead man while trying to solve "who dunnit".

We had a repeat of the cocktail party and dinner on Saturday night and someone else gets murdered during that time. Now things get complicated for everyone! I did manage to get some great pictures of the cast that I will share with you.

Prince Advilromanoff played by Philipp Hedfeld

Anthony Falconetti (Fast Tony) played by Patrick McDonald
Sergeant Morrisey played by Gabe Mauger and Miss Jane Marple played by Ellie Mauger
Gerda Schmolsson played by Carla Kerr

The above pictures were taken on Saturday night. The following pictures were taken on Sunday morning, February 18, 2018, where we reveal the winners who solved the murders and award prizes right after an excellent breakfast. First, second and third prizes are given by the Lodge Resort and Spa and the Booby Prize and Costume Prize are given by the NMSU-A Theatre Guild.

Winner of the Second Prize with JD
Winner of the Third Prize with JD
Winner of the Booby Prize, a bottle of New Mexico wine, flanked by Carla Kerr and JD
Rachel, winner of the Best Costume Prize, a bottle of New Mexico wine, with Carla and JD
I do apologize for not getting the rest of the names of the prize winners. We will be doing this again on April 27-29, 2018 at the Lodge Resort and Spa in Cloudcroft because they sold out and had a waiting list of people wanting to come and I will make sure to get the prize winners names this time.

I also failed to get a picture of Monica Desjardins who played the part of Dr. Tina Constant, Coroner and Julia Newton who played the part of Hildegarde Schmitten. My apologies to both of you. I'll catch you on the next one.

If you ever have a chance to play in one of these murder mysteries, don't hesitate. For the most part, it is improvisational and you have a chance to really get into your character. Tons of FUN.

This is all I have to say for now.

Valentine Dinner at New Restaurant

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

As a rule, the hubster and I go out to dinner on Valentine's Day and this was no exception. I made a reservation at a brand new restaurant in town called "The Local" which was called "Memories" before it sold and it was a favorite place to dine.

We were wonderfully surprised at how delicious the food is. They had just that afternoon made a prime rib and I decided to try it. Oh my goodness! It was out of this world delicious. Doug had a French Dip sandwich  and he said it was perfect. Afterward, we had creme brulee for dessert and it too was perfection. We will definitely be returning to The Local again and again.

They haven't had their "grand opening" yet so watch for it.
Carla, Doug's favorite photography subject!

Red Hatters Tea At Friendship Tea House

February 10, 2018

Members of the New Mexico Roadrunner Chapter of the Red Hat Society in Alamogordo, New Mexico were the first customers of the new Friendship Tea House on Saturday, February 10, 2018.

This lovely tea house is Barb Frick's dream come true and she is a grand hostess and an excellent cook as well. We were treated to scones with Devonshire Cream, various sandwiches, cookies, fruit on a skewer, deviled eggs, gelatin salad, potato salad, an assortment of teas and her award winning cake.

We took a tour of this adorable tea house which, besides the large room with a long table, includes a room decorated for children's birthday tea parties. When you walk down the hall from this, there is a large closet which she calls the wardrobe room with hats, gloves, scarves, jewelry, etc. for little girls to dress up in for their tea party. The back room (she calls it the sun room) has a huge round table for playing games, cards, or arts and crafts. There is a galley kitchen all shiny new and Barb's darling husband assists her.

You may book a tea by appointment only by calling Barb at 605-360-8800 (she moved here from South Dakota) and as she says, "Pour yourself a memory".

L to R: Gail, Trudy, Flo and Darla (notice the decor around the room)
L to R: Margie, Flo, Darla and Carmen (each ceramic high heel held a place card)

We had such a grand time and several of the girls said they are ready to go back anytime. I apologize that there are not more pictures because there were ten Red Hatters in attendance but I was having too much FUN to pay attention to photography!

Thanks to Barb for taking the picture of me with the cake.

This is all I have to say for now.
