Linda Barker and Carla Kerr of Alamogordo Explore Bosque del Apache

Monday, December 30, 2019

Linda Barker and I drove to San Antonio, New Mexico and eight miles beyond to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. This beautiful refuge teems with sandhill cranes, snow geese, Canadian geese, bald eagles, around fifteen species of ducks during Winter months and numerous other birds and animals including bobcats, mountain lions,  coyotes, mule deer, wild turkey and great blue heron along with northern harriers. At least 25 species of shore birds visit this refuge every spring, including various sandpipers, ibis, stilts, plovers, phalaropes, godwits, dunlins, and curlews.

There are more than 150 species of cacti and other Chihuahuan Desert plants in the Desert Arboretum. They grow and bloom during the spring months and these prickly plants and their fruit provide shelter for nesting birds and tasty treats for javelina and quail. You will hear the calling of quail and the cooing of roadrunners. Avocets and stilts establish their nesting sites as well.

In the summer you will enjoy seeing hummingbirds and orioles at the feeders. Black-chinned hummingbirds arrive in the spring and number in the dozens during the summer. Calliope, broad-tailed and rufous hummingbirds arrive later in the summer.

The Festival of the Cranes, held during the week before Thanksgiving, offers up to 150 workshops, tours, lectures, and hikes over several days. Topics range from cultural history to natural history, photography to astronomy, and expressive arts to birdwatching. The weekend activities are geared toward kids featuring learning activities, exhibits, games and several workshops.

I noticed many photographers there with lenses on their cameras, some maybe three feet extended. One man was leaning against his truck to help him hold up this heavy lens. I'm sure he shoots some amazing pictures with his apparatus, but I managed, with my small camera, to get some decent shots.

Linda is retired from the U.S. Forest Service and she is very knowledgeable about plants and animals in the wild. I very much enjoyed her informative comments as we drove along viewing the critters in their comfortable habitat. We weren't lucky enough to see any of the land critters this trip, but I do plan to return in the future. We only had time to complete one of the loops so I'll do the other one next time.

This is a highly recognized wildlife refuge in the United States and it is well kept and easy to navigate. I highly recommend you visit this place if you are ever in the area. The visitor's center is quite lovely and they have a wonderful gift shop as well.

These are pintail ducks and they are all feeding except one

Another family of cranes

We are beginning to see larger numbers of cranes
There are thousands of sandhill cranes who winter here before returning to Canada in the spring
Finally, a family of deer
The sun is going down and the cranes are flying in for the night
Beautiful New Mexico sunset
Isn't is amazing how well they blend in with their surroundings!
Canadian geese (one on right looks like she is wearing a hat, but it's a leaf)
Snow geese
Notice how pink the water looks from the sunset
This was taken on Tuesday morning on our way home and the crane family is having breakfast at a nearby farm. The farmers are paid to plant certain grains that the cranes and geese will eat and they fly from the habitat at sunrise to the surrounding farms and dine all day, returning to the habitat at sunset. They only feel safe resting in water.
We stopped in Carizozo, NM to stretch our legs and this is Linda Barker in front of the Lincoln County Courthouse

It was a fabulous trip and I learned a lot about the flora and fauna of New Mexico from my friend, Linda Barker. Thanks for driving, Linda.

This is all I have to say for now.

Alamogordo Democrats Hold Public Land Rally

Sunday, October 30, 2016

Members of the Alamogordo, New Mexico, local Democrats held a Public Land Rally at the corner of 10th and White Sands Boulevard on Sunday, October 30, 2016 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. They were energized by the horns honked and people with "thumbs up" as they drove by.

Only one negative incident when a man in a large red pick-up truck drove by; turned and drove around the block and when he got to the corner again, revved his engine and blew horrible black smoke all over a couple of our people standing there with signs. This was just mean and tells a lot about that person!

Thanks to Chris Jones for spearheading this gathering. There were only nine people attending and carrying signs, but it only takes one person to make a difference in this world.

Helen Harding is always so enthusiastic

Paul Duran and Joan Price were also present helping out, but I failed to get a picture of either of them. It was a good two hours and well worth our time and efforts to make people aware of how important it is to stand up for and protect our public lands.

This is all I have to say for now.

Democratic Party Pre-Primary State Convention in Isleta Pueblo, New Mexico

Saturday, March 12, 2016

My husband, Doug, and I (Delegates) actually drove to Albuquerque, New Mexico on Friday to a hotel because the block of rooms for the convention at the Isleta Resort and Casino was already filled. We then went to the convention area to check-in and verify our credentials at 6:30 PM. We were going to attend the reception held by Congressman Ben Ray Lujan, but the lines were long and the area so crowded, we decided to dine elsewhere.

On Saturday morning we ate breakfast at an IHOP and got to the convention in time to caucus for Hillary Clinton for president before heading to our assigned area (Otero County) for the convention. The Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of the State of New Mexico (DPNM), Debra Haaland served as the facilitator and she did a great job of keeping the meeting moving along. Thank goodness she did because there were numerous speakers and much business to handle as well.

Governor Edward Paul Torres, Sr. of the Isleta Pueblo gave the welcoming speech and offered a prayer in the Isleta Tiwa language which was quite melodious. There were special addresses by Attorney General Hector Balderas, State Auditor Tim Keller, State Treasurer Tim Eichenberg, State Senate Majority Whip Michael Padilla and House Minority Leader Brian Egolf.

Report of the Credentials Committee was given by Martin Suazo, Chair, Judicial Council and Reading of the Call was by Neomi Martinez-Parra, Secretary DPNM.

Candidate Nominations and Speeches were as follows: Secretary of State: Maggie Toulouse Oliver, New Mexico Supreme Court: Michael Vigil, New Mexico Court of Appeals: Julie Vargas, US House of Representatives CD l: Michelle Lujan Grisham, CD 2: Merrie Lee Soules, CD 3: Ben R. Lujan.

Introduction to Keynote Speaker Juan Sanchez, Vice Chairman, DPNM, Keynote Speech to Delegates Governor Dannel P. Malloy, Connecticut.

Video Address to Delegates given by Secretary Hillary Clinton and a video address given by Senator Bernie Sanders.

Report of the Platform & Resolutions Committee made by Chair John Dyrcz. The voting on this Democratic Party Platform was made by having each delegate vote yes or no on a small ballot and then take it out to the lobby and place it in a yes or no cardboard box. There was much discussion about this Platform as people lined up to give  pros and cons opinions. The results of the voting was NO by three votes.  Sometime during the lengthy counting of the votes Debra Haaland adjourned the convention.

It was an interesting experience and we are glad we took part in this great American tradition.

We returned to the hotel and took a well deserved nap. Then we went to our favorite Hibachi Restaurant for dinner and it was delicious.

Thanks to Douglas A. Kerr, Photography for taking all the pictures and processing them to go in my blog. I do apologize for not taking a shot of him but he is always behind the camera and it just didn't occur to me.

This is all I have to say for now.
