Alamogordo City Commission Says Farewell to Mayor Susie Galea

Tuesday, February 23, 2016

The regular meeting of the Alamogordo City Commission in New Mexico was held in the Willie Estrada Community Center to accommodate citizens who wanted to participate in saying goodbye to Mayor Susie Galea. There was quite a crowd in attendance and she received a standing ovation when she, in tears, finished her speech to the group. Mayor Galea's daughters have health issues which can not be treated here so she is moving to Albuquerque to be near doctors.

Mayor Galea was presented with a lovely plaque commemorating her service to Alamogordo by acting City Manager George Straface.

Among other items on the Commission's agenda was getting agreement to go forward with the plan for the Family Fun Center. Several people spoke about the need for a 24 lane bowling alley as opposed to a 16 lane and their explanations were quite compelling such as attracting bowlers here for tournaments. There was also discussion of the fact that the restaurant is located too far from the bowling lanes in the plans and it sounded like this will be rectified.

The meeting was well conducted and left little to time-wasting by anyone including commissioners and citizen speakers.

Senior Jubilee at First Presbyterian Church in Alamogordo, New Mexico

Tuesday, February 23, 2016

Approximately 50 senior citizens attended the Senior Jubilee "Lifting Rural Voices" led by Judy Bonnell, Senior Jubilees Director. A lovely breakfast buffet was provided and after everyone got their food and settled down, Perry Lawson, Community Education and Outreach Director of COPE, made a presentation entitled "A Place Where Even the Pillows Smell Safe" telling of experiences at the shelter for abused individuals and children being cared for there.

After a short break and a snack, the next presentation covered "What Seniors Can Bring to the Stage" by Perry Lawson, actor, Carla Kerr, actor, writer and President of the Theatre on the Hill Guild, and Bob Trowbridge, playwright, actor and set designer. Each spoke of their experiences in the theater and urged seniors to check out the Theatre on the Hill perhaps creating an opportunity for them to try something they have always wanted to do but just didn't know how to get started. They were also told about acting classes at NMSU-A and the fact that the cost is minimal and seniors are always welcome.

Perry talked about Joylyn Mercouris who would have been at this event and about her recent passing. He also treated everyone to a video of Joylyn and Monica Helm in a portion of "Senior Moments". It was hilarious and the audience seemed to really enjoy it. This was a fitting tribute to Joylyn and her accomplishments at the Theatre on the Hill.

Monica Hunter, administrator of Access Home Health LLC, and her group answered many questions from he attendees about home health care access and how medicaid fits into the picture. Then their physical fitness instructor gave examples of low-impact exercise suitable for seniors such as once every hour to sit in a chair, raise arms with hands clasped overhead, breathing in through your nose, then lowering your arms hands still clasped as you purse your lips and breathe out through your mouth. Do this five times and it oxygenates your blood and you get fresh blood to your extremities as well as the rest of your body. The other exercise is still sitting in a chair, once every hour, raise the heels of your feet so you are on your tippy toes, relax, then raise your toes so you are on your heels five times. This helps get rid of  nightly leg cramps. He also said to just walk five minutes each hour around the house if nothing else and before you know it, you've walked a half mile in a day. Apparently "five" is the important number for these exercises.

A delicious luncheon buffet was provided for all attendees and Perry Lawson did a wrap-up of the day's events and talked about ways seniors can help others who are in need.

It was a well-run event and Perry did a great job of providing the program for the event even changing it up at the last minute to make a tribute to Joylyn Mercouris. One of the best things about this Senior Jubilees besides making new friends and learning about new opportunities is the whole event was free.

Thanks to Judy Bonnell and her crew, Judy Hatfield, Ken Bonnell, Lynda Emmel, Nina Walker-Saenz and Debbie Riley, First Presbyterian Church for providing the venue and Monica Hunter for her presentation.

One little side note: As I was washing my hands in the restroom I noticed a sign beside the sink that read "For those who are weary, lean on the Lord, not the sink!"

After our regular monthly meeting, Doug and I decided to drive to Tularosa, New Mexico, 13 miles from Alamogordo to dine at Casa de Suenos and since he was still in a photography mood, he shot a few pictures.

This shot of Doug and me was made by our sweet waitress Lindsay
Can you tell I just might be his favorite subject??

Red Hatters Dine at Cowboy's Steakhouse in Alamogordo, New Mexico

Saturday, February 13, 2016

Members of the New Mexico Roadrunner Chapter of the Red Hat Society gathered at Cowboy's Steakhouse in Alamogordo, New Mexico for lunch and to do some adult coloring. Karen Townsend brought a guest, Pat, visiting from Wisconsin. She was given a Red Hat brochure and said she was going to check for chapters in her area when she gets home. Jan Jennings was welcomed as a new member of the chapter.

Queen Ladybird aka Carla Kerr provided the same coloring subject to each member and they used gel pens, colored pencils and markers among other coloring tools to paint a cat. The differences in each coloring of the same subject were remarkable among twelve people taking part. No one actually got finished with the project, but a judgement was made by one person appointed by the Queen and Dorothy Smith won the prize for best over all, a Valentine box of chocolates.

Two Red Hatters were serenaded by the rest with Happy Birthday on our Kazoos and sung by those who forgot their Kazoos. Dorothy Smith received a red hat and Lynne Herrald received a Red Hat purse for their birthdays.

The food was very good but the lack of acoustics made it difficult to communicate. Each attendee received a valentine from Queen Ladybird and more plans were made for future events. Hopefully everyone who was unable to finish their coloring will do so at home and bring it back for all of us to see. Get well cards were signed by all for Trudy who had lip surgery to excise a cancer and for Margaret who suffered an ankle sprain.

This is all I have to say for now.
